Toronto’s Virgin Gaming announced recently that it has signed a deal with Electronic Arts which will make online betting a possibility for some of EA’s most popular sports games, including Madden NFL 11 and FIFA 11. Virgin’s wagering system will allow players to place bets on the outcome of their tournament games, while systematically tracking the players on their Xbox 360 or PS3 to prevent fraud and cheating. Prizes have the possibility to run to tens of thousands of dollars. The enterprise has already been met with enthusiasm, with over 170, 000 users from around 30 countries participating.
Accounts are created via the Virgin website, and require the use of a credit card. When a player agrees to the terms and conditions of a tournament, they will have the buy-in price deducted from their account. The winner is therefore not crowned until the tournament is finished. The franchise is already expanding, with plans in the works which will allow players to create their own tournaments which will become available in the coming months.
On the negative side, it has put Canadian government officials under further pressure as how to regulate online casino and online poker gambling , and has received some concern from parents who will have to keep an eye on their children’s use of the system. Criticism has also been levelled regarding addiction, with the manager of the problem-gambling service in Canada stating that gambling and video games should not be mixed, with both seeing high-levels of addiction individually.
